How to measure your mobile signal and choose the right repeater
This guide shows you how to measure mobile signal strength at your premises and work out the network's operating frequency (band) .
You need both before you can choose the right GSM, 4G or 5G repeater for your home, office or business.
✓ Measuring signal strength
✓ Identifying the band
✓ Choosing the right system
Before you start measuring
Go outside to the spot where the external antenna is likely to be mounted.
Turn off Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Calling.
Turn mobile data on.
Make sure the phone is using the SIM of the operator you want to boost.
How is signal strength judged?
Signal strength is measured in dBm . The closer the figure is to zero, the stronger the signal. For example, -80 dBm is better than -105 dBm .
Signal strength
Rating
What it means
-80 dBm or better
Very good
Strong outdoor signal
-81 to -100 dBm
Acceptable
Worth assessing a boosting solution
-101 to -105 dBm
Weak
Needs careful technical assessment
-106 dBm or lower
Very weak
May need a more powerful or specially designed system
Measuring the signal on an iPhone
Dial the code *3001#12345#* and press call.
In Field Test Mode, go to: LTE → RsrpRsrqSinr .
Find the RSRP reading and note the value in dBm.
To find the frequency, go to: RAT → Serving Cell Info → Band Info .
Take a screenshot showing both the RSRP and Band .
Please note: The names and positions of these options in Field Test Mode can differ with the iOS version, the iPhone model and the operator.
Measuring the signal on Android
Move to the spot where the external antenna will be mounted.
Open the app and wait a few seconds for the readings to appear.
Note the signal strength in dBm and the connection's frequency or band.
Take a screenshot.
One important clarification These readings are the first stage of a technical assessment; on their own they do not guarantee a particular level of coverage. The final choice of equipment also depends on floor area, layout, building materials, the number of storeys and the outdoor signal available. Mobile repeater systems must be installed and operated in line with the current regulatory framework and EETT requirements.
