The "programmable loudness up to 106 phons" means that the loudness emitted by the device can reach 106 phons, and this level is programmable, meaning it can be adjusted according to needs.

What are phons;

The phons is a unit of measurement of the perceived loudness of sound by the human ear. Unlike decibels (dB), phons take into account how we perceive sound, depending on its frequency.

  • E.g. 106 phons ≈ 106 dB at a frequency of 1,000 Hz (where the perception is the same).

  • If the sound has a different frequency (e.g. lower), it may need more dB to "sound" equally loud.

What does this mean in practice for the MOTOTRBO R5?

  • That the speaker sound can be very loud – ideal for noisy environments (e.g. worksites, factories, ports).

  • The user can set the maximum volume level via the CPS (Customer Programming Software) or a profile.

Advantages:

  • Crystal-clear listening even with machinery in the background

  • Adjustment per use: e.g. a quiet office ≠ an industrial space

Additional advantages:

  •     LED status indication, a large PTT button, buttons designed for use with gloves
  •     Intrinsically safe version option (ANSI TIA-4950) for hazardous environments
  •     Warranty & services: 5 years hardware/software (standard or enhanced maintenance)
