Preamplifiers
Low-noise preamplifiers fitted close to the outdoor antenna, where amplifying the signal before it travels down the cable keeps the noise figure low.
Position matters more than gain here: a preamplifier at the bottom of a long cable run amplifies the loss along with the signal, which is why it belongs at the top.
